Yu-mei Huang is a knit artist. She uses materials with a playful approach and focuses on the garment as an object associated with art therapy. ‘Knitting Industry Creative’ has described her work as “bold and funky sculpture”, bringing together textile art and fashion.
Yu-mei combines unconventional yarns and allows different materials to shape her practice. She focuses on textile manipulation and her work is characterised by vibrant colours and three dimensional textures which reinvent traditional knitting techniques. Her works push the boundaries between body and space, redefining the relationship between garment and wearer.
She is a graduate of the Royal College of Art’s MA in Womenswear Knitwear, and her works have been exhibited worldwide. In 2017 and 2019 her collections were selected to showcase during London Fashion Week.
