Iznik Pottery-Painting Workshop with VitrA and the Kiln Rooms

VitrA teams up with the Kiln Rooms to host an Iznik-style pottery-painting workshop, followed by drinks and nibbles. Hosted in the VitrA London showroom, the event offers an opportunity to explore a heritage craft skill whilst learning more about ceramics – a material synonymous with the bathroom.

About

Why not try your hand at a centuries-old technique for decorating ceramics? VitrA Bathrooms is teaming up with the Kiln Rooms to host an Iznik-style pottery-painting workshop. The event at VitrA London’s Clerkenwell Design Hub offers an opportunity to explore a heritage craft skill while learning a bit more about ceramics – a material synonymous with the bathroom.

The Iznik pattern-making style originated in 15th-century western Anatolia, influenced by the aesthetics of Chinese Ming porcelain. Characterised by flowing arabesque motifs in a blue and white palette with accents of green and red, the underglaze technique was historically applied to ceramic vessels as well as the tiles that decorate many examples of Ottoman architecture – including buildings in the Hagia Sophia complex in Istanbul. Immensely popular for more than two centuries, the art almost died out in the 18th century. Today, it is kept alive in Turkey by a combination of independent craftspeople and educational institutions.

During the fun two-hour workshop, participants are guided in the Ottoman art of pattern making by specialist tutors, applying the hand-painted technique to a plate to take home. After the event, your finished artwork is sent away for glazing before being returned to the showroom for you to pick up at a later date. The event concludes with time to chat over drinks and light nibbles.
