Zha Qiong Ba Rang / Gong Qu Ba Rang, from Ruoergai, Sichuan, is the founder of the Za Qiong Cang Ecological Culture Development Center and a visiting professor at the Qinghai Provincial Party School. He initiated community participation in grassland governance. After transitioning through roles as a teacher, a “Beijing drifter,” and an environmental protection worker, he “returned” to his hometown of Ruoergai to accompany the community and herders in the collaborative management of grassland desertification issues. He has been invited to share the indigenous scientific governance model of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on CCTV’s “Narration” program and has been a guest lecturer for “Conservation Biology” at the National School of Administration and Peking University. The 2015 documentary “Herdsman Ba Rang,” filmed by CCTV, won the Gold Award at the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Herdsman Ba Rang has successively carried out pilot projects for desertification control in places such as Ruoergai County in Sichuan Province, Maqu County in Gansu Province, Gui County, Jiu Zhi County, and Qumalai County in Qinghai Province.
