About

‘Paper Weaving: Reframing Immigrant Narratives’ is a collaborative event by visual artist and designer Ella Krispel and Old Spitalfields Market.

The aim of the woven tapestry installation and collaborative workshops is to expose and celebrate the wide range of identities that make up the fabric of immigrant life in London and the UK.

Printed paper which tells the stories of immigrants’ diverse backgrounds and identities is woven together to form one immersive tapestry. The tapestry challenges commonly used language and assumptions used in relation to migrants coming to and living in the country.

Ella’s large-scale, colourful, eye-catching paper-woven installation uses the craft of weaving as a metaphor for assumption-building. It highlights how the language used in relation to immigration can frame it in a misleading light.

The communal workshops invite members of the public to weave together a collaborative and vibrant tapestry. Each participant contributes their own perspective through each piece of woven paper, which will be combined to form a single woven composition.
