About
The beehive project was to make a batch of beehives to the unique design of an Oxfordshire beekeeper, Andrew Bax.
The Sylva Foundation took the design and made it suitable for their production methods along with ensuring an efficient use of timber. The cladding is made from homegrown Western Red Cedar and the framework is oak.
The Drayton Hive is fitted with an entrance, inspection window, removable floor and roof. The sides and ends are heavily insulated so that, together with the insulation bags the bees are well protected against extremes of temperature in both winter and summer. Its raised, horizontal structure enables management without bending or lifting, the standard hive holds 18 frames. Overcrowding in the hive is avoided by replacing frames full of capped honey with empty frames as the season progresses.
