About

The lunetier Ludovic Elens will host a masterclass at Scabal on Savile Row, offering an insight into the making of bespoke spectacles.

Conceived as a focused and informal presentation, the masterclass will allow visitors to follow the creation of a bespoke frame. The process will be explained step by step, from the initial meeting with the client and first sketches, through material selection, shaping, fitting and polishing, while one of the Maison d’Artisans’ craftsmen demonstrates the work live at the bench.

Visitors are invited to observe closely, ask questions, and engage directly with the makers, gaining a clear and concrete understanding of what bespoke spectacle making involves in practice.

The presentation reflects how bespoke spectacle making is practised today: through a sequence of precise, hand-executed steps, repeated over time, where proportion, comfort and long-term wear guide every decision. Particular attention is given to how a frame is built to sit correctly on the face, to move naturally, and to remain comfortable and robust over years of use. Materials such as horn, acetate and metals are shaped and refined entirely by hand, with constant attention paid to fit, balance and durability.

At Ludovic Elens, all frames are made entirely in the Brussels-based atelier, where an in-house savoir-faire has been developed and practised on a daily basis for over a decade. Design and making take place within the same space, with no outsourcing of production, allowing full control over each stage of the process.

At a time when spectacle making is recognised as an endangered craft by the Heritage Craft, this masterclass presents a living practice rather than a static demonstration. It reflects an approach rooted in handwork, precision and material understanding, resulting in frames that are genuinely made to measure.
