Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery
BOOKING INFORMATION
£14.00
A major exhibition celebrating British designer Marthe Armitage, foregrounding pattern-making as a hand-driven, exploratory craft. Featuring works on paper, prints and archival material, the exhibition reveals how drawing, repetition and colour are shaped into textile and surface design through meticulous, tactile processes.
About
‘Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker’ presents a rare opportunity to explore the working language of one of Britain’s most distinctive post-war designers. The exhibition traces Armitage’s lifelong engagement with pattern as a form of craft — from hand-drawn motifs and experimental repeats to richly layered printed designs.
Known for her bold yet intimate works on paper, Armitage treats pattern not as decoration alone, but as a disciplined and expressive process shaped by time, rhythm and the physical trace of the hand. The exhibition brings together prints, preparatory studies and archival material, revealing the stages through which ideas evolve into finished designs.
Staged within the historic setting of Pitzhanger Manor — the former home of architect Sir John Soane — the exhibition creates a dialogue between historic interiors, surface ornamentation and contemporary approaches to making. Exhibition-related talks, tours and workshops are currently in development and will be announced closer to London Craft Week.
