About

Anita TOMPANG began learning the intricate art of ketupat weaving at the age of 9 and now brings nearly 50 years of expertise to this traditional Southeast Asian craft. She has been featured in Singapore’s leading Malay-language newspaper for her dedication to preserving this cultural tradition, having handwoven ketupat, the decorative palm leaf pouches used to hold rice during festive meals, every year for over 20 years in celebration of Eid-al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of Ramadan.

Despite the declining practice of this traditional craft, Anita remains committed to promoting and teaching ketupat weaving to ensure its continuation in Singapore’s cultural landscape.
