About

Andy Yeo is Singapore’s sole practitioner of lacquer threading (qi xian diao), a rare decorative technique traditionally used in ceremonial effigies and religious iconography. Originally trained as an interior designer, Andy transitioned into heritage restoration in 2015, dedicating his practice to preserving traditional crafts. In 2022, he travelled to Kaohsiung, Taiwan to study lacquer threading, returning with new knowledge, tools, and a renewed commitment to sustaining this intricate art form.

Participants will be introduced to the tools and materials used in the process, gaining an understanding of how this delicate technique is constructed. A video demonstration will illustrate the full process of lacquer threading, from preparation to application.

Andy will conduct a live demonstration to show how to apply intricate, decorative patterns on sculpture. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a hands-on experience to try basic techniques for better understanding of the material and processes.

Through demonstration and guided interaction, participants will gain insight into a living heritage practice that continues to be sustained through dedication, adaptation, and the sharing of knowledge.
