About

What does it mean to reinterpret a traditional craft in a contemporary world?

Join batik artist and designer Lisa King in conversation with Louis Copplestone (V&A), Rebecca Hoyes (Central Saint Martins) and Fiona Kerlogue (SOAS) for a panel exploring batik’s cultural origins, global circulation and renewed relevance today.

From questions of authorship and cultural exchange to the future of artisan knowledge and the value of handmade practice, the discussion considers how historic textile traditions can be critically re-examined and recontextualised for contemporary audiences.

Chaired by Lisa King
Louis Copplestone, Curator, Asia Department, Victoria and Albert Museum
Rebecca Hoyes, Associate lecturer and designer, Studio Hoyes and Central St. Martins
Dr. Fiona Kerlogue, Batik researcher, SOAS
