Karolina is also running a workshop so you can create your own unique pająk chandelier and a free demonstration on paper pom pom making.
About
Pajaki are traditional Polish chandeliers made of rye straw and paper pompoms. Their history dates back to the mid-18th century. They were made by country women as decorations for their homes, especially for Christmas and Easter, as well as for weddings and christenings. Suspended from a ceiling in a main room, among colourful paper cut-outs, paintings and paper flowers, they became a popular decoration in Polish village houses. They were a symbol of harvest and happiness in the New Year.
Today the tradition is practised less and less. Karolina Merska aims to keep the tradition of pajaki alive. This year’s London Craft Week marks 10 years since Karolina created her first pajaki. The exhibition presents her new series of pajaki chandeliers, inspired by traditional techniques she learnt from Polish folk artists as well as contemporary forms and new materials. Pajaki, suspended among antique furniture at the Committee of Taste’s tranquil space, reimagine Karolina’s artistic journey.
As part of her exhibition, Karolina will also run a special pajaki making workshop. During this 2 evening workshop, she will take you on a magical journey into Polish folk art. Surrounded by Karolina’s new pajaki designs and her favourite folk objects, you will learn about Polish traditional crafts and create a unique pająk chandelier made of rye straw, paper pompoms, flowers and various materials of your choice. By the end of the workshop, you will learn some new, unique skills and take a beautiful pająk with you to decorate your home.
Dates: Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th May, 6.30pm—9.30pm. Please make sure you can attend the workshop on both evenings. Attendance on both evenings is required to finish your pajak.
All materials are provided, including a glass of prosecco, soft drinks, and snacks, which will be served during the workshop.
