About
During London Craft Week, The Lacquer Company invites visitors into their showroom to discover the Son Mai lacquer technique, a centuries-old craft defined by patience, precision and layering.
Well known for colourful collections with renowned designers such at Rita Konig, Miles Redd and Veere Grenney, The Lacquer Company specialises in handmade lacquer furniture and accessories, combining traditional Vietnamese craft with contemporary Western design. Alongside its designer collections, the company works closely with clients on custom pieces, where the versatile nature of lacquer allows for a wide degree of creativity in colour, scale and form.
Rather than a formal presentation, this is an open and welcoming opportunity to learn through conversation. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, explore the materials and finishes up close, and gain insight into the meticulous process behind Son Mai lacquer, from raw layers to polished surface.
Son Mai is built slowly, using natural materials and repeated applications that are wet sanded back by hand. This time-intensive approach results in surfaces with remarkable depth, durability, and subtle variation, qualities that are best understood when seen in person.
Throughout the week, The Lacquer Company team will be on hand to talk through the process, explain the techniques involved, and share how Son Mai lacquer is translated into contemporary objects and furniture. Pieces from the designer collections will be on display, offering a clear view of how traditional craftsmanship meets modern design.
This drop-in experience is designed for both craft enthusiasts and those simply curious to learn more. Whether staying for a few minutes or longer, visitors are welcome to explore at their own pace and gain a deeper understanding of one of lacquer’s most distinctive techniques.
