Yali Glass returns to London Craft Week for 2025 with ‘Ebb and Flow’, a dynamic site-specific installation where the beauty of glass meets the sculptural force of metal in an ode to the power of nature.
In the heart of London, a long line of handcrafted ‘Kati’ tables appear to hover in a surreal glacial landscape that stands elevated above the gallery floor. Each transparent glass table top, cast by hand in Murano, echoes the undulating forms of large blocks of ice which float delicately above a curved metal base, forged in Japan by Okayama-based furniture design studio Kitaworks in three different variations: copper, brass and steel.
Inspired by the icy landscape of the Engadin in Switzerland, the tables also speak to the effortless flow of water and its tidal presence in the Venetian lagoon. The Kati tables, as their name suggests, began as a collaboration between Yali Glass and Kitaworks, initiated by Sonya Park, the visionary founder of Arts & Science, Japan. Together, with their mutual appreciation for artisanal craft, the two companies explore the universal language of design and the power of creative collaboration, providing the perfect opportunity for the skill of Italian glass maestros to meet those of Japanese metal welders in a harmonious and collaborative composition.
‘Ebb and Flow’ invites an audience to move freely, exploring the multifaceted and adaptable nature of the table’s structure, which can be used as a simple side table or as a contemporary chabudai (the short-legged table used in traditional Japanese homes). Each table is set with a variety of Yali Glass products to reflect this dual identity, creating a pathway that encourages a natural current through the space, mirroring the sinuous forms of Venice’s islets and shorelines and furthering the table’s symbolic identity as a union between Eastern and Western culture.
