ercol is passionate about working with British-grown timber and collaborated with The Sylva Foundation to create a hand-crafted box from home-grown timber. For London Craft Week, ercol chairman, Henry Tadros, provided the creative brief: to make a small, timeless craft item using GiB timber. The beautiful results included an exquisite coffret made from ash, with a textured sliding lid in sycamore, sweet chestnut, oak and beech. We’re now working with the Sylva Wood School team to develop designs for future ercol products, all using home-grown timber from these other species, in addition to the ash we’re using currently.
The Sylva Wood School, is a unique specialist teaching centre dedicated to ‘inspiring excellence in craft, design and education using home-grown timber’. The Sylva Wood School is educating the next generation of designers, makers, consumers and woodland owners in the value of home-grown timber. This, of course, is precisely in tune with our own philosophy at ercol, as reflected in our work with Grown in Britain (GiB) to produce classic ercol designs exclusively in British-grown ash.
Producing more furniture-quality timber from British woodlands is a long-term vision for us and The Sylva Foundation. It has the potential to transform not only our industry, but also our national environment, landscape, economy and climate response. We’re delighted to be working towards it together.
Over London Craft Week ercol Chelsea will have a display about the collaboration with The Sylva Foundation and the design process of creating the hand-crafted coffret boxes. At ercol Chelsea you will be able to purchase a coffret box with all proceeds going to The Sylva Foundation.
ercol Chairman, Henry Tadros and Joseph Bray from Sylva Foundation will be welcoming visitors into the store from 2pm on Thursday 15th May.
