About

Master bookbinder and designer Manuel Mazzotti joins emerging artisan Chihiro Shigemitsu for a hands-on demonstration exploring the craft of bookbinding. Manuel, trained as both an engineer and a bookbinder, has studied with some of the finest artisans in Europe, from the prestigious Centro del Bel Libro in Switzerland to QEST-funded training with British masters Kathy Abbott and Tracey Rowledge. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate, the British Library and the London College of Fashion.

Chihiro, originally from Japan, developed a deep appreciation for craftsmanship from an early age. After studying at the University of the Arts London, she cultivated a passion for bookbinding and screen printing, focusing on the human touch in modern design. Her work bridges traditional bookmaking techniques with contemporary aesthetics, bringing a fresh perspective to the craft.

As part of the Homo Faber Fellowship, Chihiro is training under Manuel’s guidance to refine her skills and explore new creative possibilities. Together, they highlight the artistry and precision behind bookbinding, ensuring this centuries-old craft continues to evolve for future generations.
