Make a Collaborative Mosaic Designed by Adam Nathaniel Furman at the London School of Mosaic
A workshop aimed at introducing participants to mosaic making, translating a design by Adam Nathaniel Furman into mosaic. Find out more about the School’s mosaic collaboration and practices with light refreshments, and get involved in the making process.
About
The London School of Mosaic is the first and only art school in the UK focusing on teaching mosaic up to higher education level. For London Craft Week, they are collaborating with designer Adam Nathaniel Furman, translating one of his colourful and intricate designs into mosaic during two workshop sessions.
Participants of each workshop receive a short introduction to the process of making mosaics while also getting an insight into Adam’s practice. This is followed by making the mosaic specifically set up for London Craft Week, which involves cutting and laying tiles according to the design provided by Adam. At the end of the session, participants can expect to have a good understanding of how a design idea can be realised in mosaic.
The London School of Mosaic is excited to work with Adam, having been instinctively drawn to the contrasting use of colour, pattern and shapes in his works. Mosaic is created following a specific ‘andamento’, which is the pattern emerging from the flow between tiles and gaps. As many of of Adam’s works reference ornamentation and symbolism, the school is curious to see how his ideas will transfer to the concept of andamento.
Visitors to the school can expect a warm welcome to the community: a collaborative space that houses many other artists and creatives.
