BOOKING INFORMATION
£55.00
Inspired by the colours and themes of The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Seurat and the Sea at the Courtauld, this workshop will invite the attendees to explore the techniques of marbling.
About
Join the Courtauld for a special workshop as part of London Craft Week. Inspired by the colours and themes of The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition Seurat and the Sea, this workshop will invite the attendees to explore the techniques of marbling.
Unlike other print making, marbling can almost be considered a form of abstract painting. A collaboration between water and the maker, this workshop will teach attendees how to set up your marbling bath and prepare paper. It will leave you with numerous tips and tricks for achieving perfect patterns and best of all you will go home with your own beautiful papers in the colours of Seurat.
The workshop will include a tour of the exhibition by Leyla Bumbra, Head of Research Forum.
All materials will be included. The event is open to all levels. Anyone under 18 is required to be accompanied by an adult ticket holder.
This workshop will be led by:
Marmor Paperie was launched in 2015 by Lucy McGrath with the hope of breathing new life into the traditional art of paper marbling. Seeing shops saturated with mass-produced products, she wanted to herald a return to quality workmanship and give people back the joy of owning something truly special. Paper marbling is an old and beautiful technique that is now classed as an ‘endangered craft’ within the UK. Every marbled paper is different, so each item made from one is a completely unique piece. Lucy’s marbling is characterized by a fresh, contemporary colour palette and patterns that celebrate the chaotic qualities of the water base.
After winning the Arts Society/Cockpit Arts Award in 2016, Lucy joined craft incubator Cockpit Arts in south London, where she marbles every product by hand. She published her first book, ‘Contemporary Paper Marbling’, in 2019. Her stationery and giftware has been stocked in luxury retailers including Liberty, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason, and she has worked with clients including Acqua di Parma, V&A and Adidas.
