About

Atelier Como opens its studio to present ‘Masters and Makers’, an exhibition that explores the transformation of celebrated 20th-century design pieces through the hands of contemporary craft practitioners.

The exhibition showcases a curated selection of furniture and lighting originally conceived by renowned masters of design. These objects, once broken, damaged or worn by time, have been reimagined beyond traditional restoration. Rather than focus on preservation, contributors have been encouraged to breathe new life into the pieces through creative intervention.

‘Masters and Makers’ explores our long-held reverence for the great names of design and the often overlooked role of the maker. Historically, the craftsperson behind an object has remained anonymous, their expertise a silent force in bringing a designer’s vision to life. This exhibition seeks to redress that imbalance by foregrounding the maker’s influence and artistry.

A group of contemporary makers — including Jochen Holz, Line Nilsen, James Shaw, Studio Manolo, Dalia James, JAM, Jorge Suárez-Kilzi and Edge Upholstery — has each redefined an iconic piece by celebrated designers including Josef Frank, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Florian Schulz and Bruno Mathsson. Through the process of reinvention they engage with themes of authorship, contemporary craft, sustainability and the lifecycle of objects.

Atelier Como is an interior design studio working on projects big and small across the globe. It was established in 2022 by Sheila Cortale and Inés Moyes Li-Wearing. Please note that the exhibition takes place on the third floor, and there is no lift access.
