Panel Discussion: Phenomenology in Practice
BOOKING INFORMATION
A panel discussion exploring phenomenology in contemporary design — how sensory dimensions, material authenticity and cultural context create meaningful connections. Featuring practitioners in architecture, art and academia, hosted at UAL’s London College of Communication.
About
Phenomenology in Practice — a discussion hosted by global ceramic design brand Mud Australia — explores the importance of phenomenology in contemporary design practice and its role in creating work that cuts through the noise.
This panel discussion questions how the sensory and emotional dimensions of design, informed by an understanding of material, place and time, can create meaningful connections between people, objects and spaces.
Moderator:
Lucy Sanderson: A multidisciplinary design and research studio dedicated to fostering equality in environments through material-driven, spatial and visual projects, deeply engaged in post-digital discourse.
Panellists:
Ab Rogers (architect): Renowned for vibrant, sensory-focused designs prioritising human experience.
Seetal Solanki (Materials Translator): Founder of Ma-tt-er, specialising in material storytelling and sustainable practices; author of Why Materials Matter.
Larry Achiampong (multidisciplinary artist): Larry Achiampong’s projects employ film, still imagery, aural and visual archives, live performance, objects, sound, and game design to explore ideas surrounding class, gender, cross-cultural, and digital identity.
Exhibition:
In addition to the panel discussion, Mud Australia proudly marks its 30th anniversary by collaborating with emerging talents from UAL’s London College of Communication (LCC). Selected MA Design for Art Direction students create and present work inspired by Mud Australia’s core values: community, craft, care and sustainability.
This multidisciplinary exhibition transforms Mud Australia’s Islington and Marylebone stores into immersive art and design exhibitions. The selected student work offers a fresh interpretation of the brand’s three-decade journey, integrating London’s cultural diversity with the students’ unique backgrounds and perspectives. Through this collaboration, the exhibition highlights the timeless relationship between craftsmanship and community while imagining a sustainable future. Each piece reflects on Mud Australia’s history while envisioning new possibilities for design that prioritises care for both people and the planet.
The exhibition is open during store opening hours from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 May.
