About
The New Craftmaker proudly presents a solo showcase, titled ‘Novus Collection: Part II’, celebrating the evocative work of artists Ash & Plumb.
Renowned for their mastery of woodturning, Ash & Plumb craft exquisite vessels that honour the natural rhythms of the material. Each piece is formed on a lathe, shaped through a delicate balance of precision and intuition, allowing the wood’s unique grain to guide the final form. Known for their sensitive and intuitive approach to woodturning, Ash & Plumb draw inspiration from archetypal and ancient forms, translating historical references into a distinctive contemporary language. Through a process of slow refinement, they reveal the organic beauty within, creating objects that resonate with quiet strength and timelessness.
At the heart of Ash & Plumb’s practice is an intimate dialogue between maker and material. They work predominantly with sustainably sourced native hardwoods, often salvaged or locally felled, ensuring that each creation carries a narrative of place and provenance. The process begins with careful selection, responding to the character of the wood — whether it’s the rippling figure of spalted beech or the deep warmth of cherry. As the vessels take shape, they embrace imperfections and natural irregularities, celebrating the wood’s inherent history rather than obscuring it.
As part of London Craft Week, renowned gallerist and Creative Director of The New Craftmaker, Sarah Myerscough, hosts an insightful conversation with Ash & Plumb, offering a rare opportunity to delve into the philosophies and processes that define their craft. Sarah explores how their practice embraces the imperfections of wood — knots, cracks, and organic textures — allowing these elements to guide rather than constrain their designs. This conversation offers audiences a deeper understanding of how Ash & Plumb’s work exists at the intersection of heritage and innovation, celebrating the enduring dialogue between maker and material.
