Stone Carving with It’s Written In Stone
BOOKING INFORMATION
Have a go at hand-drawing your own lettering, transfer it onto slate, and then carve it by hand with a chisel and mallet – just like the Romans did! You will come away with a coaster, an appreciation of this old British craft, and a new recognition of letter shapes.
About
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to draw your own lettering, carefully transfer it onto slate, and carve it by hand using a traditional chisel and mallet, working in much the same way Roman stone carvers once did.
Guided step by step, you’ll be introduced to the basics of letterforms, spacing, and layout before moving on to the satisfying process of cutting into stone. No previous experience is needed and all tools and materials are provided.
By the end of the session, you’ll take home your own hand-carved slate coaster, gain an appreciation for this historic British craft, and develop a sharper eye for the shapes, balance, and character of letters.
Refreshments will be provided, please advise on any dietary requirements at time of booking.
Please note this workshop is open to over 16’s only.
