About

Join artist and designer Lisa King and researcher and batik expert Dr Fiona Kerlogue for a discussion on Indonesian batik. Lisa shares the cloths and stories that make up her Indonesian family batik collection, which have provided the basis for a collaboration with New & Lingwood. Fiona gives context to the historical use, colours and motifs of the cloth used in the collaboration and charts the use of batik in modern-day fashion.

New & Lingwood’s Re:New project foregrounds craft, slow production, cloth innovation, recycling, re-sale and re-pair processes, whether that’s one-off dressing gowns made from repurposed cloth or their repair centre, where your favourite old clothes can be given a second life.

Lisa King is a multidisciplinary artist and designer whose dynamic visual work is in response to her personal experience, a love of nature and her British, Thai and Indonesian heritage. Her batik practice takes inspiration from her late mother’s antique and textile collections. She is passionate about preserving and progressing the art and sustainability of this ancient craft through supporting artisans and her own fashion and art collaborations.

Dr Fiona Kerlogue is a lecturer and author specialising in Southeast Asia. She was Deputy Keeper of Anthropology at the Horniman Museum for 15 years and is now a research associate at SOAS, University of London. She has lectured in the USA, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Siberia as well as in several European countries.
