About

Drawing on the textile work of artist Katarzyna Perlak in their current exhibition Survey II, Jerwood Arts presents a day of workshops and talks with UK-based artists, makers and curators. These consider Perlak’s ‘Tender Crafts’ methodology, how crafts can be used to revisit and reimagine history from contemporary diasporic, feminist and queer perspectives, acting as a tool for archiving past and present historic moments, intimacy, connection and (self) care.

TENDER CRAFTS: Workshop
Saturday 9 October, 11am-1pm
Specially programmed for London Craft Week 2021, artist Katarzyna Perlak invites participants to embroider a handkerchief with their own personally significant motif or message; to archive personal histories, collective memory and cultural etiquette.

TENDER CRAFTS: Panel Discussion
Saturday 9 October, 2:30-3:30pm
For London Craft Week 2021, Ann Coxon, Curator of International Art at Tate Modern is joined by contemporary visual artists Katarzyna Perlak, Rebecca Bellantoni and Raisa Kabir for a discussion which explores how crafts can be used to revisit and reimagine history from contemporary diasporic, feminist and queer perspectives.

Perlak’s commission for Survey II, Bated Breaths, is an installation of embroidered handkerchiefs that each present a different proverb or saying relating to Britain and Poland. The series archives current and historical moments, considering how the formation of these phrases reveal intersections of personal histories, collective memory and cultural etiquette.

Survey II presents new commissions by ten early-career artists from across the UK, providing a distinctive snapshot of current artistic concerns and approaches. It takes a non-institutional approach to selection by inviting over 30 leading artists to nominate the most outstanding early-career artists making work today. Spanning a breadth of disciplines including photography, sculpture, textiles and film, it features work by Saelia Aparicio, Tereza Červeňová, Sadé Mica, Rebecca Moss, Cinzia Mutigli, Katarzyna Perlak, Shenece Oretha, Tako Taal, Nicolaas van de Lande, Angharad Williams. Open until 11 December 2021.
