Join the Young V&A for the final week of London College of Fashion’s ‘Contemporary Jewellery’ takeover of The Shed. Tutors Bernadette Deddens, Carol Wiseman-Watts, Husam El Odeh and Dr Mala Siamptani alongside alumni have developed and delivered a series of Ancient Egyptian-inspired workshops. These range from protective charms and symbolism in amulet-making to exploring exquisite and intricate beadwork with paper-beaded bodices. Their responses aim to showcase how contemporary makers take inspiration from historic objects and approaches to creativity.
Young V&A is a museum sparking creativity now and for the future, with spaces to imagine, play and design. Created with 0–14-year-olds, it is a place for young people and grown-ups to be inspired by the power of creativity and discover the creative possibilities of our national collections. The Shed is a studio for makers and designers to create work and visitors to gain rare insight into a busy design studio.
BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery is an idea-led design course that uses fashion jewellery as a medium for students to find their voice and develop their vision. The course is set to support students in becoming informed and inspirational fashion jewellery designers who can innovate and challenge the industry through a unique approach to their practice.
The course teaches a wide range of approaches to manufacturing that include traditional and new technologies as well as digital approaches. Design thinking, cultural and contextual awareness and professional communication and presentation skills support the students to become designers who can respond to the demands and challenges of our times. With an experiential and transformative curriculum, the course is grounded in dialogue and uses jewellery as a medium to express ideas. Recognising the cultural capital and lived experiences of students, the course fosters the development of unique design identities while equipping them with transferrable skills valuable across the broader creative industry.
