About

Brodie Neill’s ‘Woodstrokes’ collection, premiering at No. 9 Cork Street, FRIEZE Gallery, boldly explores waste wood as a medium for sculptural furniture. Drawing inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, Brodie transforms veneer ends — discarded offcuts from industry — into striking works that transcend function, inviting a rethinking of material potential and artistic expression.

Brodie’s process blurs the lines between artistry and craftsmanship. The works, from dining tables to mirrors, celebrate the veneer’s natural textures and tonal variations, composing a spectrum drawn from nature’s palette. Once overlooked and destined for incineration, these materials are reimagined into objects of beauty and purpose. Each piece forms a tactile narrative of material consciousness, where the veneers ebb and flow with the sculptural language of the collection.

The ‘brushstrokes’ in ‘Woodstrokes’ are made from locally sourced veneer offcuts, transformed through an innovative handmade process that enables Brodie to quite literally paint with wood. Through this collection, he redefines the lifecycle of materials, elevating the veneer from industrial remnants to a medium for artistic exploration and creation. Much like the forms he constructs, Brodie’s work embodies the relationship between the discarded and the reimagined, the raw and the refined.
