About
Camille Piaton is a French designer whose work extends across multiple disciplines including leather weaving and cabinet making. Having trained at the École Boulle in Paris, Camille’s background is in traditional cabinetmaking and design. In search of creative freedom she then set up her studio workshop in Biarritz, by the Atlantic Ocean.
At the heart of Camille Piaton’s work is the perpetual search for beauty. She considers her work as the meeting point between art and craft. Consequently, she works each leather weave, each bedhead, each piece like a unique work of art. Self-taught in leathercraft, she has developed both her own techniques and her own tools for leather work to the same high standards as when working with wood or metal.
She says: “I create unique spaces and pieces of furniture that have a strong presence. I see this creation as the passing of a moment, a moment of human exchange.”
She works locally in southwestern France and sources her leather from the renowned Tannerie Rémy Carriat in Espelette, who also supply the greatest names in leather goods design and production.
Each strip is cut individually by hand from leather chosen for its superior quality. It is then worked to create a unique artistic picture. Camille Piaton has become a specialist in handmade leather weaving for wall coverings and works with interior designers and interior architects. She has presented her work at Design Dubai Fair amongst others.
