About

In Carolyn’s ceramic practice, memories and observation of these traditional pieces inspire shapes. Thoughts, stories, impressions and images are collected then printed on to delicate papers, torn into fragments and reassembled, so reshaping new stories. Fresh connections, and interpretations, are made.
“The human condition”, love and loss and memory form the themes that decorate Carolyn ‘s surfaces. “I create my own “families”, pieces differing in shape and size, scale, curve and decoration, but united in spirit. Oriental-inspired ceramics with a contemporary twist”.
In traditional Oriental blue and white porcelain, love and messaging are often conveyed through symbolic motifs and inscriptions. Floral patterns, hearts, birds, and interlocking designs represent unity and affection. Inscribed messages or poetic verses, sometimes in calligraphy, express emotions, making these pieces not only decorative but also intimate tokens of love and connection.
Carolyn’s work for Future Icons will consider the concept of love, its metaphors and symbols and will be based on “Love in the Time of Cholera” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a piece of literature that profoundly moved her at first reading in her early 20’s.
Carolyn graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in the late 1990’s with a degree in Ceramics and now works out of her studio at Wimbledon Art Studios in South London. Carolyn has been shortlisted for the 2025 Young Masters Art Prize.
