About

Chloé Rosetta Bell is a Ceramic Artist. Material-focused and primarily working in clay, her practice examines livelihoods dependent on a specific landscape. This is driven by her relationship with the land surrounding her home on the Isle of Wight. Situated in the Undercliff it is one of the largest areas of urban landslip in Europe. Chloé studies the material sand narratives connected to the site to inform her collections. By sourcing and transforming these materials, her objects become a tangible celebration of the landscape, placing a subtle but essential emphasis on its sustainability. They act as a physical and sensory record that preserves the landscape and the livelihoods that depend upon it.‘The Salt Collection’ that will exhibit at London Craft Week examines the practice of the saltmakers ‘Halen Môn’. Over the past three years Chloé has visited the Lea-Wilson’s of Halen Môn on the edge of the Menai Strait and observed the alchemical process in their saltcote. Seawater is filtered naturally into their cote and gently heated to form a brine. The brine that runs into crystallisation tanks forms salt crystals. When the salt is rinsed in a brine solution traces of chalky chalky calcium carbonate and metal oxides are left behind, this is dehydrated and turned into a paste. It is this by-product that Chloé brings back to her studio to develop glazes for her Salt collection.
