About

Ceramicist Deborah Brett explores the beauty of experimental glazes and the joy of unexpected, organic forms. From her West London home studio, former fashion editor turned ceramicist Deborah Brett creates forms with the transformative alchemy of glaze, where surface experimentation leads the shape. Her work is a study in form guided by glaze, revealing Deborah’s deepening fascination with material and process.

“I’ve become a bit of a self-confessed glaze geek,” says Deborah, “I hated chemistry at school, it just didn’t resonate with me, but now I’m obsessed with experimenting with my own glazes in the studio, layering volcanic, metallic, or gloop glazes to see how they run, drip, pool and react with the clay beneath and what can be produced. There’s a real alchemy to it – an organic unpredictability that gives each piece a life of its own and a real sense of pleasure experimenting with natural elements and

watching the transformation happen in the kiln.”

The fluidity and movement of her glazes echo the hand-built forms, which are shaped with an inherent sense of flow. Textured surfaces invite the glazes to gather, shift, and pool organically across each piece. While not consciously inspired by the sea, an underwater sensibility naturally emerges through the interplay of material and form.
