About
Emma Louise Payne’s practice explores ceramics as both material and language, positioned between architecture, design and ritual. Her work is driven by an interest in how objects shape behaviour, movement and moments of pause within everyday life. Drawing inspiration from architectural environments, domestic spaces and communal rituals, she investigates how form and function can be subtly redefined.
Emma embraces processes that balance control and unpredictability. She uses hand-building and slip casting techniques to establish structural clarity, while experimental glazing introduces variation, texture and individuality. Imperfection is central to her approach; each piece retains traces of the hand and the conditions under which it was made.
Her work often sits at the intersection of utility and contemplation, inviting slower engagement and renewed attention to ordinary actions. Through material exploration and considered form, Emma aims to create objects that foster connection, between people, spaces and the rituals that quietly shape our lives.
