About
Gwangsu Seo is a ceramic artist devoted to the formal clarity of Joseon-period white porcelain and the material depth produced through traditional wood-fired kilns. His work begins with composed vessel forms while fully embracing the unpredictability generated by fire, air flow, and kiln conditions.
Trained in traditional ceramic environments, Seo has researched and reconstructed a wide range of classical Korean techniques, including buncheong ware, white porcelain, tenmoku, and copper-red flambé glazes. Among these, copper-red kiln transformation and wood firing form the core of his artistic language, allowing flame, oxidation, and
reduction to leave direct traces on the surface.
After establishing Hando Ceramic Studio in the mid-1990s, Seo has continued to explore traditional forms and glaze research as a means of translating historical depth into contemporary ceramic expression. Rather than seeking absolute control, his work accepts chance, duration, and accumulated time as essential components of form and
meaning.
