About

Brighton-based ceramicist Hiroko Aono-Billsonā€™s work is inspired by her motherā€™s collection of functional Japanese ceramics and the Mingei movement, meaning ā€œart of the peopleā€. Originally from Shikoku, an island in Japan, her journey with ceramics began over 30 years ago with a course at Morley College in London. Her ceramics are made from earthenware terracotta clay and she uses the sgraffito technique ā€“ where a slip or glaze is applied, then scratched off to reveal the layer beneath ā€“ to create unique patterns.
