About
Brighton-based ceramicist Hiroko Aono-Billsonās work is inspired by her motherās collection of functional Japanese ceramics and the Mingei movement, meaning āart of the peopleā. Originally from Shikoku, an island in Japan, her journey with ceramics began over 30 years ago with a course at Morley College in London. Her ceramics are made from earthenware terracotta clay and she uses the sgraffito technique ā where a slip or glaze is applied, then scratched off to reveal the layer beneath ā to create unique patterns.
