About

Ilamon is a textile designer and maker who graduated from the Royal College of Art. She excels in unravelling folk stories and the natural world through woven textiles and surface development.
Her approach to textile design intertwines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Ilamon has a keen eye for details and enjoys working with natural materials and colours. Her work is deeply hands-on which relates to her creative process. Driven by a passion for interiors, surfaces, and spaces for their limitless and freedom they offer.
Ilamon is the founder of studio Ila and works closely with the artisans and the weaving tribes of Meghalaya to preserve the skills and uplift their craft. Her experience in handcrafted sector has helped shaped her creative identity and discovering her values and practice. She received the “PRIME Award” at the Ateliers Meghalaya Program in 2021 for her initiatives with Ramie Fibre and engaging with the local tribes using sustainable practices. Her Ramie lamp shade created for the “Northeast Edit” crafted from repurposed waste fibres and yarns was featured in the Architectural Digest, India in July 2022. In the same year, her work depicting the story of the Khasi tribes was exhibited at the Sur Santati -Then, Now, Next exhibition Celebrating India through the continuum of Indian Heritage textiles at the National Museum, New Delhi India.
Ilamon was thereafter selected by the Meghalaya State Government to represent them as a designer at the Meghalaya Ramie Project exhibition at the Lace and Fashion Museum in Calais, France on October 8, 2022.
Rooted in her Khasi tribal heritage surrounded by sacred forests, living root bridges, cascading waterfalls, rivers, and hidden caves, Ilamon tells her story through textiles, creating pieces that reflect her connection to nature and culture.
