About

Each year at Sylva Wood School a creative one-week Summer School is held. This provides an opportunity for early career designers and makers to come together and work on a design brief. Early iterations of the Summer School were the inspiration for the Woodworking and Gender Project that envisions thriving, inclusive and diverse heritage woodworking sectors enriched by the creativity and perspectives of women, trans and non-binary makers.

The ‘Coffret’ box, designed by Summer School student Kay Stephens, was selected to be developed for manufacture in limited editions by students on a six-week gender project course. The inspiration for the curveaceous top that slides back and forth was fidget spinners, allowing the owner to interact with the natural material.
