About
Ling Shan is an independent Chinese artist specializing in weaving, embroidery, and traditional dyeing. In 2013, she embarked on a journey to explore the cultural roots of Chinese design by visiting ethnic minority villages in Southwest China, where she immersed herself in learning and modernizing traditional handicrafts while preserving their heritage.
Through her fieldwork, Ling Shan discovered a unique Chinese creation philosophy that contrasted sharply with the Western design principles taught in her schooling. This profoundly influenced her postgraduate studies in traditional Chinese arts, deepening her appreciation for China’s cultural heritage.
Her artistic practice involves engaging with textiles, natural dyes, and intricate stitchwork to explore the emotional resonance of traditional crafts. Her work captures collective memories and personal narratives, reflecting on the relationship between materials and cultural identity. Through her detailed handcrafting, she transforms raw materials into both tangible and conceptual expressions, probing how our connections to material culture and the environment are woven into our psyche.
