Llewellyn studied Art History at the University of Warwick. He went on to write on various subjects and to work as a documentary researcher. He was responsible for producing the original list of Buildings of Merit for the 20th Century Society and was also employed in the theatre as a scenery painter producing drops for Covent Garden and Glyndebourne.
He later studied Fine Art and Illustration at the City and Guilds of London Art School, specialising in wood-engraving – commissions include work for the Royal Mail and the Folio Society. Llewellyn also studied Illustration at the Royal College of Art. He won the Paris studio bursary and continued to develop the wide illustration practice for which he is principally known.
