About

Marcus is a designer and silversmith now based in a small village on the edge of the North York Moors. He has been involved in design since graduating in 1981 as both a designer maker and as a lecturer, teaching at various colleges and universities on undergraduate and post graduate design programmes as well as pursuing his own design practice.
He works predominantly in metal, employing traditional metalsmithing and fabrication techniques to produce distinctive yet deceptively simple and understated metal vessels and objects that are both functional and sculptural. To finish them off he used a variety of chemical patinations, paint and gold leaf that give each piece a richly textured individual surface and a sense of age and history.
The inspiration for much of the work draws from an ongoing interest with ancient and modern architectural styles and details from both historical and vernacular sources and has its roots in the buildings in and around Florence where the family lived for a few years.
The current collection of work was initially in response to a death in the family and a wish to preserve and commemorate a memory. To have a simple, elegant and unique receptacle that can contain just a single spoonful of ashes or a small personal and intimate object of importance as a memento mori of sorts, without any of the usual morbid overtones.
The range of Pyxis and treasure houses are the result of this avenue of exploration.
Marcus continues exhibiting his work nationally and internationally.
