About

Rob Street Carter has always had a need to create and make, and after spending much of his earlier career working in the sailing world, he settled back in North Wales and embarked upon a Fine Art and Sculpture degree.
With a background and understanding of woodworking and the challenges and possibilities within marine environments, he naturally gravitated towards making collectable art furniture which was inspired by the sea.
Rob’s first commission for a seat – hence “noho” a word which means to sit, to dwell to live. Made simply out of locally sourced oak from the client’s woodland set a blueprint for exactly how he wanted to work. Using sustainably sourced native timber with traditional hand tools. Working with the unique characteristics of individual pieces of timber Rob looks to bring out the character within the raw material.
His pieces are influenced by connection to the surroundings. As often seen sculptural gouges and mark making referencing nature’s weathering, the patination left by an ebbing tide or the contours left behind in the confluence of river and see his work has evolved to incorporate other natural materials, from leather to hand cast bronze ties and handcrafted woollen seat cushions.
A commissioned piece of furniture becomes a part of our life in a way a mass manufactured item never could. And Rob hopes that his pieces become heirloom objects that people will continue to cherish for generations to come.
