About
Learning to make a sculpture takes years. At just five years old, Nyima began his journey in his uncle’s workshop as an apprentice, where he meticulously memorized deity postures, gestures, and measurements, and mastered various skills, culminating in his first bronze figure crafted from start to finish in his twenties. Since then, for the last 40 years, Nyi ma has been practicing bronze sculpting. He is the most well-known sculptor in Dzongsar and has also served as a master teacher to more than 30 students over the past 15 years. Additionally, he has been recognized as a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts and is a designated representative inheritor of Sichuan Province’s intangible cultural heritage. When it comes to arts and crafts, he is a perfectionist. Nyima emphasizes to his students that arts and crafts are a lifelong learning experience—something you can only improve upon with time. As the sixth generation of Khyenle arts&crafts, Nyi ma says, “Khyenle is all about its quality, not the quantity.”
