About
National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea / Holder of Jangdojang (Ornamental Knife Making)
Jangdojang refers to the craft of making knives and their sheaths, used not only in daily life but also as weapons for self-defense or accessories, particularly by women. During the late Joseon Dynasty, Jangdo evolved into decorative accessories made from materials like gold, silver, jade, and various woods, symbolizing cultural and philosophical values. Traditionally, Jangdo were gifted to instill virtues such as loyalty, filial piety, and integrity.
This exhibition features a letter knife inspired by Jangdo, which serves as both a decorative office piece and a practical tool for cutting paper, such as envelopes and notepads.
A Holder of Intangible Cultural Heritage is a nationally recognized expert who has mastered and continues to practice the archetypal skills of intangible cultural heritage, certified through thorough evaluations and deliberations by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee.
