National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea / Certified Trainee of Geumbakjang (Gold Leaf Imprinting)
Geumbakjang refers to the technique of imprinting various patterns on fabric using thin gold leaf, as well as the artisans who possess this skill. Gold leaf imprinting is commonly seen on women’s wedding attire.
Her father-in-law was an Honorary Holder of Geumbakjang, her husband is a Holder of Geumbakjang, and both she and her son are Certified Trainees of Geumbakjang—a family that has passed down the Geumbakjang technique through five generations since the reign of King Cheoljong of the Joseon Dynasty as royal artisans.
Gold leaf imprinting requires expertise in woodcraft for carving plates, a deep understanding of gold leaf properties, and an eye for arranging patterns that complement clothing compositions.
A Certified Trainee is an artisan who has completed at least three years of successor training and demonstrated a certain level of proficiency in their skills or performances, earning a certificate of completion.
