About
Craftsman Raymond Wong is one of Singapore’s last remaining Peranakan kebaya makers, preserving a centuries-old tradition of intricate beadwork and embroidery. With over 16 years of dedicated practice, Wong has become a guardian of this distinctive Southeast Asian craft heritage, which blends Chinese, Malay, and European influences into exquisite textile artistry.
As co-owner of the renowned boutique Rumah Kim Choo in Singapore, Wong not only creates bespoke Peranakan garments but also ensures the craft’s continuity by conducting masterclasses in traditional beadwork techniques. His commitment to education extends to his role as part-time Fashion Design and Textiles lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts since 2013, where he inspires the next generation of makers.
Wong’s work represents the delicate intersection of cultural preservation and contemporary craft practice, making him an essential voice in global conversation about traditional making techniques and their place in our modern world.
