About
Richard Goldsworthy is an award-winning artist and maker based in the Scottish Borders. He began his practice in 2019 after graduating from Edinburgh College of Art with a degree in sculpture.
Specialising in sculptural objects and wall pieces, his practice merges traditional techniques with experimental processes, crafting sculptural forms that explore the intrinsic beauty and transformative potential of the natural materials he works with.
In much of his work, Richard combines wood and pewter, which has become a signature look in his creations.
Inspired by organic forms and the natural world, Richard’s body of work is defined by a minimalist yet tactile aesthetic. The choice of wood, whether walnut, ash, oak, sycamore or something else plays a central role, with techniques like charring and pewter casting used to highlight the inherent qualities of each material.
The contrast between the wood grain, metal, and charring creates a visually striking balance that defines his sculptural style.
Sustainability is a key consideration, with Richard sourcing wood from naturally fallen or sustainably managed trees and incorporating second-hand pewter into his pieces. Richard approaches each project with a focus on craftsmanship, allowing the materials to guide the creative process.
His work emphasises experimentation, seeking innovative ways to blend traditional techniques with contemporary forms. This constant exploration drives innovation, resulting in a body of work that is both unique and visually compelling.
Richard has exhibited widely across Scotland and the UK, with his work featured in private and public collections. His talent was recognised early in his career with the prestigious RSA Barns- Graham Travel Award.
Since 2021, he has been based at Marchmont Creative Spaces in Berwickshire, where he continues to refine his tactile approach to making.
