About
Sofia Aguas is a product designer and ceramist whoes journey began in 2013 when her family relocated to Santiago, Chile.
After months of fruitless job hunting, Sofia turned to pottery classes, rediscovering the joy of working with hands and reigniting her creative spirit. This marked a turning point in Sofia’s life.
Over the years, living in diverse countries has profoundly shaped her artistic practice. In Chile, the vibrant landscapes and rich cultural heritage deeply inspired her early work. Madrid broadened Sofia’s artistic horizons, allowing to experiment with new techniques influenced by the city’s urban energy. Belfast offered fresh perspectives, with its complex history subtly informing her ceramics.
During the pandemic, Sofia returned to Lisbon and honed skills through formal studies at Ar.co, refining her artistic voice. In Cardiff, a vibrant ceramic community further enriched her practice through participation in art markets and exhibitions.
Since 2024, back in Lisbon, Sofia continues to explore and evolve her craft. Her practice is research-led, blending functional principles with sculptural aesthetics, aiming to transcend the ordinary and evoke simplicity and purity. Her work reflects a balance of functionality and artistry, deeply rooted in a background as a product designer.
Sofia sculpts clay into a vocabulary of textures, natural tones, and pure forms, reducing objects to their essential essence. Her work bridges the tangible and intangible, balancing geometry with spontaneity, structure with movement, and precision with serendipity.
Each piece is handcrafted from slabs, shaped and textured by hand, drawing inspiration from the colours and patterns of the Andes Mountains. By stripping away the superfluous, Sofia pushes the boundaries of traditional hand-building and surface treatments, focusing on the raw beauty of materials.
Her artistic identity is a mosaic of influences from Chile, Spain, and the UK, each contributing to the evolution of my unique vision.
