About
Sue is a lettering artist and sculptor, and former Lettering Art Trust journeyman. Lettering has been a defining force in her life, ever since her father gave her a Letraset book when she was about 10 years old which inspired her to copy and design letterforms.
For 25 years she worked as a graphic designer until, increasingly disenchanted with ‘computerised creativity’, she changed her career direction and in 2019 she graduated from City & Guilds of London Art School’s Historic Carving course. There she won the Taylor Pearce Drawing competition; the Roger de Grey drawing competition and the British Arts Medals Lettering Awards. Her application to the Lettering Arts Trust for a Journeyman placement was enthusiastically supported and she completed her training with Charlotte Howarth and Annet Stirling in 2022.
Sue lives in Felixstowe in Suffolk and is establishing a workshop to provide elegant, hand-carved memorials and contemporary lettering commissions.
Sue has recently been part of the Abraxas Academy team, who have won a competition to design the National LGBT+ Community Memorial, a monumental sculpture that will be installed at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. This will be the UKs first national memorial for Veterans who lost their lives, careers or were imprisoned for being gay. Other notable commissions include a full figure sculpture for the Royal Artillery Company, Woolwich, and a coin design featuring Shirley Bassey for the Royal Mint.
“I believe the lettering Arts Trust Journeyman Scheme has been fundamental in my learning. The opportunity to hone my skills and knowledge with two exceptionally inspirational women mentors, which in turn has given me the courage and capacity to live my dream!” Sue Aperghis
