About
Tess Newall is a decorative artist working between Sussex and London, painting bespoke murals and furniture for interiors around the world.
Tess’ approach to design is rooted in research. After studying archeology and anthropology at Oxford University, Tess trained as a scenic painter in film and theatre before establishing her own decorative painting studio in 2018. Drawing inspiration from historic references across a variety of mediums, her work has a timeless aesthetic that feels as at home in contemporary interiors as in historic homes. She views the textures within each piece as integral as the colour palette, and intends for every project to evoke an atmosphere and tell a story.
Today Tess leads a team of specialist painters from her studio in the South Downs. In 2022 she designed her first wallpaper, gradually building a collection of homewares borne from murals she has painted and from her personal collection of historic documents. Working with traditional methods of manufacturing, Tess’s homewares emphasise the character and integrity of hand processes.
