About
Tingting Xiao is a traditionally inspired weaver and textile artist, whose research-based practice explores connections between South-east Asian natural yarns and the human’s internal world via the creative approaches of contemporary design principles. Her recent work emphasises the spiritual experience through the sensory touch and also through feelings of woven textile artwork. Consistency, sustainability and spiritual design are key forms of expression within her artwork. Following her MA in textiles at Chelsea College of Arts, she is now enjoying her textile arts career in London.
She won first place in the Bradford Textile Societies Design Competition 2024 (F1 category) for Responsible Design and Sustainable Practice. Her Conceptual Woven Bag (2024), inspired by traditional Chinese cheongsam patterning, uses a continuous plain weave process to form 3D structures, instilling tranquility and consistency in both making and viewing. This work has been exhibited at Peckham Levels, ST.ART Gallery, Brick Lane Gallery, and Window 135, and will be shown at the Visions Museum of Textile Art (San Diego) from October 2025 to February 2026 in Fibre Art Now.
Her artistic vision is to help audiences sharpen their sensitivity to and appreciation of the material used in an era increasingly dominated by materialism and mass-produced artificial products that occupy human senses. It’s not just about fabrics but also everything seen and touched.
