About
At the newly opened Westbourne Grove gallery in London, Modernity presents its curated collection of rare and unique 20th-century Nordic design and art, in addition to contemporary ceramic works from Alvina Jakobsson and Sandra Davolio, whose studios are based in Sweden and Denmark respectively.
Alvina’s sculptures are inspired by both nature and the human form, with movement and repetition being central parts to her artistic practice, allowing greater freedom of interpretation from the viewer. Sandra’s works have always been inspired and attracted by objects from ancient Mediterranean cultures. Her work can now be found in some of the most beautiful residencies worldwide, as it is gaining interest from an increasing number of international collectors. The process of creating these delicate forms means that several can break during firing, making the work even more unique.
Alongside these contemporary works are classic design pieces from Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, Josef Frank and Paavo Tynell, amongst others, as well as textiles by Märta Måås-Fjetterström and artworks by Rune Hagberg.
Modernity opened its first gallery in Stockholm in 1998, and since then has continuously supplied pieces to international collectors and museums, such as the MoMA and Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York, the LACMA in Los Angeles and the National Museum in Stockholm.
