The Little Globe Co: Porcelain Globes ‘From Middle Temple to Manoa’

An exhibition of new ceramics at the studio of Loraine Rutt, inspired by the Middle Temple Library’s ‘Molyneux’ globes. An online talk with TIDE Project explores globe making, literary networks and luxury goods in Stuart & Jacobean London, and their collaboration of academic research and contemporary craft.

About

Parallel to the exhibition in the library at The Honourable Society of The Middle Temple – home to the rare Molyneux globes and not open to the public – Loraine Rutt has recreated the exhibition in her atmospheric studio. Her latest work is shown alongside facsimiles of the 16th and 17th Century books at Middle Temple and academic narrative ‘From Middle Temple to Manoa’. These new ceramics have been made in response to a collaboration with TIDE researchers Dr Lauren Working and Dr Emily Stevenson of the University of Oxford, who have selected historic books from the library that examine transculturality, identity, travel and networks in the literary milieu at the Early Modern Inns of Court, focusing on the desire for world knowledge and luxury goods.

Through maps, globes and ceramic vessels, Loraine’s work explores the influence of early cartography, inviting the visitor to consider their own worldview and the geopolitics of exploration and trade. Open by timed appointment.

Online conversation: Join Loraine Rutt, Dr Lauren Working and Dr Emily Stevenson as they discuss globe making, literary networks and luxury goods in Stuart and Jacobean London, and their collaboration of academic research and contemporary craft.

Exclusive tour: The Honourable Society of The Middle Temple is hosting two exclusive tours of the exhibition ‘From Middle Temple to Manoa’ at the Library, with librarian Renae Satterley and Loraine Rutt. Very limited places and booking essential.
