Fritz Hansen Presents the History of Poul Kjaerholm
Fritz Hansen presents the history of Danish designer Poul Kjaerholm, including new and archive pieces from a collection produced by Fritz Hansen since 1982. As part of the exhibition, Lene Iversen demonstrates how she hand weaves the PK22 for Fritz Hansen, ordinarily from her home on the Danish island of Endelave.
About
Fritz Hansen pays tribute to Danish designer Poul Kjaerhol in an exhibition at the Fritz Hansen showroom, dedicated to his history and work, with new and rare archive pieces from his designs.
Demonstration with weaver, Lene Iversen
On October 7th and 8th, weaver Lene Iversen demonstrates her craft and techniques used in the creation of the PK22 wicker chair, which she hand weaves for Fritz Hansen, from her home on the Danish island of Endelave.
Paul Kjaerholm was trained as a cabinet maker, studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen and was particularly interested in materials such as steel – perceived by Kjaerholm in the same way as wood, to be a natural material with ‘artistic nobility’.
Kjaerholm’s uncompromising approach to form and materials can be seen in his designs, some of which were conceived during his time employed by Fritz Hansen. Kjaerholm was determined to reduce the chair to a single piece of each material, resulting in its overarching hallmark: the continual steel frame that bends through the form without interruption.
Poul Kjaerholm initiated a collaboration with furniture manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen in 1955 which continued for the rest of Kjaerholm’s life, with the two families remaining close to this very day. Two years after the designer’s death in 1982, the Kjaerholm trustees entrusted Fritz Hansen with the production and distribution to architects and private clients of ‘The Kjaerholm Collection’ – designs developed from 1951–1967.
Product Launch
For London Craft Week 2021 and in celebration of 65 years of the PK22 design, Fritz Hansen is launching the limited-edition version of the PK22 chair to the UK market. The new piece is available until 31 December 2021 in two colours, finished in Royal Nubuck.
